Zambia hosts CORE Training to boost mini-grid expertise amid energy challenges

The Alliance for Rural Electrification (ARE) partnered with the University of Zambia (UNZA) School of Engineering to deliver a comprehensive training under the CORE initiative. Held from 2-6 December 2024 in Lusaka, Zambia, the programme attracted 46 engineering professionals.

The training focused on critical aspects of mini-grid systems, including technical design, procurement, installation, operation and maintenance (O&M), safety standards, and the productive use of energy. Participants also explored the 10 kWp solar PV mini-grid at UNZA, gaining practical insights and sharing their experiences.

With Zambia grappling with power shortages due to climate change-induced low hydrology levels, the training was hailed as timely and essential for diversifying the country’s energy mix. Participants emphasised the importance of capacity building to address the skills gap in renewable energy, particularly in rural electrification.

Key recommendations included:

  • Aligning future training sessions with mini-grid installations to provide hands-on experience.
  • Incorporating design software to keep pace with digital advancements.
  • Hosting regular refresher courses to ensure trainers remain current with global developments in the dynamic energy sector.
  • Establishing local and international networks to track progress and foster collaboration post-training.

This initiative is expected to strengthen Zambia’s renewable energy workforce, accelerate capacity building, and drive sustainable energy solutions to alleviate the country’s energy crisis.
