Malawi University of Science & Technology hosts CORE training on mini-grid systems

The Malawi University of Science and Technology (MUST), through its Department of Energy Resources Management at the Thyolo Campus in Southern Malawi, recently hosted the CORE training on mini-grid technical systems. The five-day programme, held from 4 to 8 November 2024, aimed to build specialised skills in designing, installing, and maintaining mini-grid systems.

The workshop drew an enthusiastic group of participants, comprising 38 male and six female engineers from various sectors, including academia, the Ministry of Energy, Electricity Generation Company Malawi Limited (EGENCO), as well as private sector engineers. Notably, representatives from the Blantyre Water Board and the Ministry of Defense also attended, showing an increasing interest in deploying mini-grid solutions within water treatment facilities and defense installations.

This training was especially timely as Malawi seeks to expand its rural electrification efforts. By equipping participants with hands-on technical knowledge, CORE aims to help close the skills gap in sustainable energy development and strengthen capacity for future projects. Additionally, the workshop offered a valuable networking platform for engineers and professionals dedicated to expanding access to reliable, clean energy across the nation.

As rural electrification initiatives continue to gain momentum in Malawi, the CORE training at MUST underscores the critical role of technical training and cross-sector collaboration in promoting sustainable energy solutions.
